Why learn Mental Health First Aid?

Considering the prevalence of common mental health problems, you’ve likely been in a position to offer support to someone in need, but lack the knowledge or experience to take the first step. Identifying when someone is in need can feel difficult, and then intervening to offer initial support in a sensitive, appropriate way is even more daunting without a ready plan of action.

Many mental health crises aren’t immediately obvious, which means that many problems pass beyond our notice. But a trained Mental Health First Aider, knowledgeable in identifying signs and symptoms of growing issues, can provide life-saving initial support in the same manner as a physical First Aider in a physical health crisis. Upon successful completion of the Mental Health First Aid course and short online assessment, participants become accredited Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), with accreditation valid for 3 years.

A Mental Health First Aid course gives you the knowledge, confidence and skills to recognise and respond to a health problem or mental health crisis. Course participants learn how to identify signs of common mental health problems, provide mental health information, and support others effectively. Learning outcomes include the ability to notice when someone needs help, follow a plan of action to stabilize crisis situations, and provide initial support until professional help is available. You’ll also learn how to guide friends, family, or colleagues to the help they need. Mental Health First Aid training helps you keep your community or workplace safe. The course is suitable for individuals, workplaces, and community based groups, and is open to any adult aged 18 and over.

We make training simple & accessible

Whether you’re looking for the tools to protect your community, or plan to improve the health & safety of your workplace, we make the knowledge & skills of MHFA as accessible as possible. Our course delivery options include online, blended, and in-person formats to suit your needs. Blended learning formats typically require participants to complete several hours of self-paced e-learning before attending a live session, either in-person or via video conferencing. We also offer non-accredited training options for those seeking prevention skills without formal certification. Our facilitators are experienced in running MHFA training in a wide variety of settings, always ready to help you understand and engage in the way you find easiest. We make the online experience as positive and accessible as our in-person courses with easy-to-understand training and dedicated support.

“Better mental health outcomes benefit everybody, and with the right skills and knowledge, anyone can make a difference”

Nick McEwan-Hall

In Australia, and also the wider world, mental health outcomes continually fail to meet the standards of a healthy, functioning society. It’s an issue that deserves our attention – to overcome stigmas and create an environment where people are supported through tough times. We believe it can be achieved with a dedicated response from everyday people.

The Mental Health Coach is our way to improve the support available to vulnerable people all throughout society in a tangible, lasting way. With knowledge from evidence-based training and the confidence to share experiences with peers, we work with you to make a difference.

Nick started The Mental Health Coach with this in mind. From his background as coach, counsellor, facilitator and leader of multidisciplinary teams, he came to understand the wide variety of ways different people engage with learning.

Through programs like the globally-recognised Mental Health First Aid training, TMHC reaches people throughout society. We help people build safer, stronger, more supportive places to work, live and grow. By sharing the knowledge and skills that help make an impact when it matters most, we can all work together to move the needle in the right direction.
