Lunch & Learn

Have open conversations about mental health in your workplace

We collaborate with businesses to host Lunch & Learn programs to invite more people to the table and introduce safe, comfortable conversations about mental health awareness.

Approaching mental health doesn’t need to be uncomfortable

It can be difficult to be the first to speak up about mental health issues, either to raise your concerns, approach someone who appears to be struggling, or seek help if you’re struggling yourself. Sometimes, the weight of silence only increases as people feel unable to open a conversation.

We help you make it comfortable and easy to have those important, often life-saving conversations. With Lunch & Learn programs, we help your team come to the table and learn some basic information about mental health. We break down myths and remove stigma to help people feel comfortable and confident discussing their own concerns & needs.

Why choose The Mental Health Coach?

Compassionate guides

Our small team of leaders, facilitators, counsellors, coaches, and advocates all have a background in support, education, leadership, and mental health awareness. We each wear many hats and share our wide range of experiences with mental health, the LGBTQIA+ community and people with disability.

People supporting people

We believe in the impact of supportive, open environments on mental health outcomes. By building mental health awareness, removing barriers to conversation, and equipping people with the tools & skills to act early and responsibly, we help people make powerful, lasting changes to their community.

Led by research

As avid promoters of mental health awareness, we have a deep belief in the ongoing advance of evidence-based knowledge. We incorporate the most up-to-date, consensus-based information in all our programs, events, courses & sessions, and always push for understanding, openness & awareness.

Reaching vulnerable people

We see groups and individuals in particularly vulnerable positions without access to the help they need. It’s our goal to meet exceptional need with exceptional effort, and cater to communities such as people with disabilities, the LGBTQIA+ community, and more with our own personal experience and bespoke, intentional support.

Accessible support

We make access our priority - in any location, from any background, in any environment - workplaces, schools & communities. We tailor our work to include the most relevant information, reach you in a way you find useful, and create an environment where everyone feels welcome and encouraged to learn.

Impactful contributions

We’re proud of what we achieve for people in difficult situations, and make the extension of our reach into those communities a priority. From AfterBAGS to Rainbow Youth MHFA & other efforts, we create opportunities to reach those in need - while helping others amplify their impact, too.

When we create a lunch and learn session, we do it in collaboration with you

Every session is different, as is every group of people, so we work with you to design something that will benefit your team and contribute to your goals.

Popular topics for our sessions often include; learning mental health essentials, open discussions about mental health, and engaging participation with quiz-style games with an educational outcome, but the sky is the limit – we always aim to deliver the information or experience you want to give with the best approach for your team.

We can also cover general leadership topics, and work with a smaller team on professional development. We’ll work with you to identify if we are a good fit for your needs, and build an engaging session that will deliver great value.

Outcomes to meet your goals

We design your lunch and learn session together, sharing our expertise of mental health and experience with helping people feel invested in training and education. With your knowledge of your team and goals for the session, we decide on outcomes to reach together.

Highly engaging sessions

We’re professional facilitators with a depth of experience, capable of delivering high-quality, engaging sessions for any group of people. For any topic, we’ll help your team feel comfortable to contribute.

Targeted skills development

Our Lunch & Learn sessions are extremely flexible for content, approach, even targeting specific knowledge and skills. You decide the outcomes you want, and we help you achieve them.

Elevate your culture

The benefit of a Lunch & Learn program is in the lightweight investment in time and disruption, and the broad reach to your team. This means we’re able to help you directly impact your workplace culture, underpinning it with informed attitudes & a responsible approach to mental health.

I now feel confident to have conversations rather than just observe people’s behaviour.

I feel so comfortable now with providing mental health first aid to anyone in need.

Nick created a safe and engaging learning environment from the beginning, he was clear, articulate, relatable with a wealth of knowledge and a joy to listen to.

It is important to do to not only improve your understanding of mental health, but to give you the confidence to act in a mental health emergency

Nick knew his subject, dealt well with Zoom and facilitated the group really skilfully. He was considerate supportive and upbeat.

If you want a solid understanding of mental health and mental illness, run by a facilitator who know’s their stuff, this is it!

Meet your coach

“Better mental health outcomes benefit everybody, and with the right skills and knowledge, anyone can make a difference”

Nick McEwan-Hall

In Australia, and also the wider world, mental health outcomes continually fail to meet the standards of a healthy, functioning society. It’s an issue that deserves our attention – to overcome stigmas and create an environment where people are supported through tough times. We believe it can be achieved with a dedicated response from everyday people.

The Mental Health Coach is our way to improve the support available to vulnerable people all throughout society in a tangible, lasting way. With knowledge from evidence-based training and the confidence to share experiences with peers, we work with you to make a difference.

Nick started The Mental Health Coach with this in mind. From his background as coach, counsellor, facilitator and leader of multidisciplinary teams, he came to understand the wide variety of ways different people engage with learning.

Through programs like the globally-recognised Mental Health First Aid training, TMHC reaches people throughout society. We help people build safer, stronger, more supportive places to work, live and grow. By sharing the knowledge and skills that help make an impact when it matters most, we can all work together to move the needle in the right direction.

What format do you run your lunch & learns in?

We run our Mental Health Essentials course as both online webinars for 20 people, and in-person seminars for 35 people. They are short sessions – roughly 90 minutes online and 3-4 hours in person, and cover the basics of mental health to give people a good foundation of knowledge.

We can design sessions for anyone in any environment. From Year 7 high school age students to adults, in the workplace, communities, and schools – across Australia and internationally. We fit our sessions to meet your needs.

We can design programs for in-person or digital delivery – or a blend of both.

It depends on the content and delivery method that you prefer, as well as considerations like psychological safety, but typically, if you have a specific requirement, it’s very likely that we can plan a course that suits your needs. We can also deliver our sessions after-hours and on weekends.

When you get in touch with us, we’ll run through a range of options and find a solution that works for you.

The AfterBAGS Project

Suicide is a traumatic, life-altering experience for the people left in its wake. We aim to make the time beyond a little more comfortable with AfterBAGS – support bundles packed with Australian-made products specifically selected to help people process the blame, anger, guilt and sadness that is so common to the experience.

An AfterBAG is an opportunity to offer support and make a difference to someone close to you or even a stranger in a tough spot.
