One small step at a time, together
We’re proud of the difference we’ve made in partnership with businesses, communities, organisations, funding bodies, and individuals who value mental health awareness & support, and propagating the skills to help those in need.
Mental health issues are universally impactful to Australian life - we hope to make small steps with a lasting impact to improve support for everyone
The state of mental health in Australia
One of the biggest obstacles to improving mental health outcomes is the barrier to open discussions and reliable information. Here’s what we we’re working for.
1 in 5
Australians affected each year
Around 20% of Australians are affected by mental illness every year – a devastatingly large proportion of the population.
42.9%
Experience a mental disorder in their lives
In Australia, approximately 42.9% of individuals aged 16 to 85 have experienced a mental disorder at some point in their lives – about 8.5 million people
3285
Deaths to suicide per year
Every day in our country, 9 people lose their lives to suicide – 3285 Australians every year. These 3285 deaths directly impact nearly half a million others.
Our combined impact so far
Through providing evidence-based MHFA and other programs, our work with AfterBAGS, our Rainbow Youth program, our free online webinars and more.
2000 MHFAiders
Trained to support their peers
Over the past three years, we’ve provided vital Mental Health First Aid training to workplaces, schools, communities, and organisations – each MHFAider contributes to a better future for everyone.
90%
Confidence to provide life-saving support
When asked how confident they feel to provide mental health first aid, our MHFA trainees gave an average score of 90% – a huge improvement from the 55% prior to our work together.
10 out of 10
A perfect score for our programs
We ask our course participants to review our performance, and we’re immensely proud to report a perfect score for student satisfaction – a result we drive through our wholistic approach to the work.
The AfterBAGS Project
Suicide is a traumatic, life-altering experience for the people left in its wake. We aim to make the time beyond a little more comfortable with AfterBAGS – support bundles packed with Australian-made products specifically selected to help people process the blame, anger, guilt and sadness that is so common to the experience.
An AfterBAG is an opportunity to offer support and make a difference to someone close to you or even a stranger in a tough spot.
Rainbow Youth Mental Health First Aid
We run free and low-cost Rainbow Youth Mental Health First Aid training for young LGBTQIA+ people and the communities they rely on. Through our initial course and the 6 months of ongoing support, we help young LGBTQIA+ people aged 18 to 25 build resilient communities full of love, acceptance, and proactive mental health awareness.
Through these grant-funded programs, we’ve trained more than 150 young people and counting – see how we make a difference.
RUOK Day seminars and other events
Mental health awareness, consistent peer support, empathy and understanding – the benefits in the workplace, school, and out in the community are immense. In addition to the MHFA courses and other programs we run, we make the broad adoption and maintenance of these behaviours a central focus of our work.
From RUOK Day seminars for businesses and organisations to Lunch & Learn sessions, psychological safety talks, public speaking events, and much more, we’re always available to help you create a culture of support and safety.
We still have a long way to go
As much as we’ve achieved, we still have a lot left to do and we would love to see you along the way.
140
People left behind for every suicide
Every single death by suicide leaves a scar on a community, and research demonstrates an increased risk for further suicides in those left behind. AfterBAGS is our way to help drive down this risk.
250%
Higher rates of mental illness in the LGBTQIA+ community
We meet this extraordinary need with a dedicated approach – our Rainbow Youth MHFA program is providing peer led support to this very vulnerable population.
$10.9 billion
Annual cost of mental health issues to Australian businesses
These costs due to absenteeism, presenteeism, compensation claims, and more, highlight the significant burden that mental health conditions place on both employees and employers. Better mental health is a goal we all share.
