One in five Australians face mental health issues every year

That’s 22% of us this year and 43% at some point in their life, each going through a serious, life-changing struggle with mental illness or mental health problems. How many people around you suffer in silence?

Recognising early signs of mental health problems—including changes in a person’s mood, behaviours, and energy—is crucial for timely support.

Giving the support we all depend on is a responsibility we all share.

MHFA training programs overview

Mental health first aid (MHFA) training programs, first established in 2000, have grown to meet the increasing need for mental health support.

MHFA training is designed to equip participants—including individuals, workplaces of all sizes, and community-based groups—with practical skills to Recognise, respond to, and support people experiencing mental health issues or crises.

The course delivery is flexible, with training delivered in various formats: face to face, blended learning, and fully online sessions. Participants can access MHFA training through in-person workshops or online platforms, with reliable internet required for online and blended formats. Each course emphasises practical, hands-on learning, ensuring participants gain actionable skills for real-life situations.

MHFA accreditation details

MHFA programs are structured, accredited courses designed for adults and delivered by certified instructors from Mental Health First Aid Australia (Aid Australia). These programs teach participants practical, evidence-based skills to recognise and respond to mental health problems and mental health crises, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, and substance use disorders.

The training is suitable for all adults aged 18 and over, and is available in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats, often developed with input from mental health professionals and people with lived experience.

Completing an MHFA course allows participants to become Accredited Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders), with accreditation valid for three years. The course covers how to approach a person experiencing a mental health problem or crisis with sensitivity, offer reassurance, provide immediate comfort, and support people until professional help is available or the crisis resolves. MHFA training equips individuals to assess risks, assist with immediate safety measures, and use the ALGEE Action Plan—a structured, five-step framework central to the course.

Learning outcomes include the ability to recognise signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses, respond effectively to emerging or worsening mental health problems, and guide individuals to seek professional help. Specialised training is provided for crises such as suicidal ideation, panic attacks, severe psychotic episodes, or non-suicidal self-injury. MHFA is not a replacement for professional therapy or diagnosis, but complements professional care by providing initial support.

MHFA is recommended for workplace leaders, public-facing roles, community groups, and specific sectors such as youth and First Nations communities.

Meet Nick & the mental health coach

“Better mental health outcomes benefit everybody, and with the right skills and knowledge, anyone can make a difference”

Nick McEwan-Hall

In Australia, and also the wider world, mental health outcomes continually fail to meet the standards of a healthy, functioning society. It’s an issue that deserves our attention – to overcome stigmas and create an environment where people are supported through tough times. We believe it can be achieved with a dedicated response from everyday people.

The Mental Health Coach is our way to improve the support available to vulnerable people all throughout society in a tangible, lasting way. With knowledge from evidence-based training and the confidence to share experiences with peers, we work with you to make a difference.

Nick started The Mental Health Coach with this in mind. From his background as coach, counsellor, facilitator and leader of multidisciplinary teams, he came to understand the wide variety of ways different people engage with learning.

Through programs like the globally-recognised Mental Health First Aid training, TMHC reaches people throughout society. We help people build safer, stronger, more supportive places to work, live and grow. By sharing the knowledge and skills that help make an impact when it matters most, we can all work together to move the needle in the right direction.
